Memories of Travel
by John Ryan
I'm lucky because I have a large family. Some live in Canada, some in Germany. We love to travel. I am 10, and I have been on 3 awesome vacations.Twice to Europe and once to Cuba. It is difficult to decide which of them was my favourite. They were all special to me.
When we went to Germany we saw our relatives. I have a great-grandmother, uncles, aunts, and so many cousins that I can't even remember all of there names. We had so much fun together. We played with the sprinkler in front of their house and built Lego together.
We went for long walks in the forest and saw castles that are hundreds of years old. I imagined how knights used to live there. We also looked for gnomes in the Black Forest because my great-grand mother told us that they walk behind you when people hike through their forest. If you turn around fast enough you can catch a glimpse of them, if you're lucky.
My favourite place was the ice-cream parlour. They serve the best ice-cream you will ever have! They even serve spaghetti ice that looks like spaghetti but is ice- cream with strawberry sauce. Let's not forget the bakery right beside my aunt's house. They sell the most delicious pretzels I have ever tasted.
We went to Cuba in 2019. We went on a plane. I met a boy named Grayson on the flight. There was so much to do every day from swimming in pools to the salty ocean and activities for kids like pool parties, karaoke and dancing. I even got to preform on stage with a Michael Jackson look alike!
We went on a catamaran ocean-tour. I helped drive the boat and pour some drinks. We went snorkelling and got to swim with dolphins. We had a lunch break on a beautiful island with white beaches, that is where we collected sea shells.
The Captain thanked me for helping out and everyone on the boat was clapping for me. I felt very special.
On our last night we went to the courtyard where they had karaoke we watched for a bit and I asked my mom if I could also sing a song. Mom was worried that I could not read the lyrics off the screen fast enough, so I picked a song I already knew the words to. So she let me. I sang Liven' la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin.
First I was a little nervous but I turned my back to the screen and gave it my best. People started to dance and when I was done I got a standing ovation from the crowd. That was the best day of my whole vacation.
I know people have to do what is right for Covid to go away, which is staying at home and social-distancing from each other. But I can't wait for the day that we can travel again.
Thank you for reading. Stay tuned for more short stories and poems from our winners.
