Local artist Mary Lou Leitch paints lyrical images of our world in watercolour and acrylic.
Calm and serene.
Mary Lou Leitch, Canadian Artist, South Simcoe, Ontario.
That is what I feel I am doing every time I start to draw, or paint. I just begin and carry on, filling the space with line or colour.
Since childhood I have enjoyed filling space and time drawing. Colouring books and a chalk board were constants. My mom would say "draw a hat or a girl a pond or a bird" and I would just draw and erase and draw something new. This was done daily while she made supper and I shared the kitchen space. At ease, enjoying what lines and colour could create.
Today I still doodle. Most become ideas for future paintings. They all come from just seeing the beauty around me continually. Light and colour shaping life. Memorable images.
I have learned from so many teachers, artist friends, in clubs across Canada, Florida and with the Artists at the Gibson, in Alliston. Also virtual shows, so available today, have helped me continue to learn and improve my skills as an artist.
Whether landscape, seascapes, animals and people. I love to paint, and draw and paint. "Love life and art."
I have had the honour of being accepted into many juried shows in Canada and the USA. I have won people's choice a number of times and sold my paintings in Canada, the USA, and England. A highlight was a sale from an entry in a juried show in Venice Florida when a year later the purchaser called to tell me it was on loan in the US embassy in Berlin. It was titled
"Celebration, Cheers for Change". This was a pastel of the Obama family on stage in 2008 as they celebrated his victory of the presidential election. They were facing the cheering crowds with the fireworks overhead as images of the Stars and Stripes.
I had fun participating in the SSAC Battle of The Brushes many years and was honoured to be chosen by the public as winner and second place winner a number of times.
My sales have been memorable images of special places, family members, children and pets. That is the key to all my paintings. If it is a constant in my mind, it is memorable. It gets reproduced in some form eventually. I hope these images provide pleasure and evoke a memory to the viewers.
