An ancient burial cairn in Donegal
Painting with watercolours is always an exploration of colour and light and the impressions that can be shared on a piece of paper with the help of some pigments, brushes and water. In these two paintings I've depicted abandoned buildings being slowly overgrown by the surrounding landscapes where they were built.
The first is an old mill I came upon in the woods outside Ramelton in Donegal, Ireland, with the sound of the water rushing around it. I extended my exploration of painting it by adding some collage to enliven the image. Can you see it?
The second is a painting I made from a photograph of an abandoned house in the Change Islands of Newfoundland. The poppies in the foreground seemed to enhance the elegiac quality of the image. Those who abandoned this house must have embarked on explorations of their own to find a new life on the mainland.
