Hide-and-Seek II

Front view of Hide-and-Seek II.
At first glance, this painting depicts bold, colourful, stylized flowers. Take a broader second look, however, and the viewer will find a neatly hidden adult male ruby-throated hummingbird hovering beside a flower on the right-hand side of the canvas.

I returned to this popular compositional structure, previously used in my inaugural OAC-funded Urban Agriculture Flora and Fauna collection of 2023, to succinctly capture the fleeting nature of this tiny, intriguing pollinator—the only hummingbird to reportedly nest and breed routinely in Ontario.

Christine Currie is a multidisciplinary Canadian artist. Her artwork is inspired primarily by flora and fauna, the precarious relationship between humans and the environment, and critical social justice issues.

Best known for her printmaking, en plein air paintings of avian life, and graphite and charcoal portraiture, Christine encourages viewers to contemplate the understated, quiet aspects of the natural world and the impact our actions have on the preservation of biodiversity, environmental wellness, and relationships within our communities.

Her current collections employ a variety of media, including acrylic, watercolour, graphite, charcoal, pastels, ink, wire, and thread, on conventional and repurposed substrates such as canvas, Japanese washi, Yupo, high-quality paper, wood panel, and blue granite.

An avid gardener and outdoor enthusiast, Christine grows her own dye plants and forages materials from wild spaces to create homemade custom inks and dyes that she incorporates into her multimedia artwork and printmaking projects.

Christine is the proud recipient of numerous Ontario Arts Council grants supporting her work. Her paintings, prints, graphics work, and commissioned pieces are held in private collections across Canada.
