The Barred Owl is a fairly large owl with a large, rounded head and no ear-tufts. It is also known as the Hoot Owl. The upper breast and foreneck are densely barred light and dark. The rest of the body is boldly streaked dark to rufous brown. A nocturnal bird that hides in dense foliage during the day, usually up high. The Barred Owl is highly vocal giving a loud and resounding "hoo, hoo, too-HOO; hoo, hoo, too-HOO, ooo" which is often phased "Who, cooks, for-you, all". The last syllable drops off noticeably. They hunt and eat a very wide variety of prey from deer mice, to squiirels and young rabbits, and even small fish, frogs, and snakes. They can be up to 2 feet in length with wingspan of up to 4 feet. The females is larger and heavier than the males. The Barred Owl is widespread in North America and can live 20+ years. I have tried to depict it in its natural setting at dusk.
