Operation No Hair Day

by Amaya James

I was walking down the stairs one morning when I caught a glimpse of the calendar. I knew it, I've had this sneaking suspicion all morning! It was...HAIR DAY!

It's not that I don't like having fresh new hair, it's just that my hair looks fine and it is fresh as daisies. It's almost as though I did it just yesterday. There is no need for new hair.

So, I dropped to the floor quickly but silently. If my mom couldn't see me, how could she do my hair? I grabbed a granola bar from the cupboard because I hadn't had breakfast yet and the cupboard door almost gave me away! Thanks to my sweet ninja moves it didn't hit the wall too hard. I crawled up the stairs with my iPad in one hand and my granola bar in the other. I would hide under my covers upstairs, and no one would find me there.

Everything was going swell until I felt someone tugging at my sheets pulling me out of hiding. It was my mother. She had been trying to find me to tell me to get ready, and I knew what that meant–it was time to do my hair. But I had another plan in mind. Operation No Hair Day!

If I could just cause a delay by getting all the hair products really slowly, I could avoid the pain. So I walked around the house picking up the hair products really, really, really, slowly. I was picking up things and putting them down over and over again. As I picked up the last product, my Sparkle and Shine gel, I realized that it was time to throw in the towel. I couldn't keep this up all day. It was game over, mission incomplete, failure.

I began to walk upstairs with my head hung low, ready to give in, but as I made it to my mom's bedroom door and peered into the room, I saw my mom getting all dolled up. She was using her fancy perfume and everything! In the next room over I saw my sisters doing the same thing. I seriously thought that I was on one of those hidden camera prank shows getting pranked. But then my mom saw me and asked me what in the world I was doing with all the hair products! Her words not mine. I asked her why she was getting all dressed up to do my hair.

"What are you talking about, we aren't doing your hair today. That's next week!" she said. "Today is your grandma's birthday, we're going to her birthday party."

I'm not going to lie, I felt foolish...almost idiotic, then my mom said "Now go get ready!" while laughing at my foolishness. In the end, I didn't end up having to do my hair so I'm calling it a mission complete. This calls for a self high five.

Oh, I can't forget grandma's present!
