Valerie Losell, after a career in teaching cut short by injury, now engages with the world as a poet and visual artist. Freed to live like a kid again, she delights in finding ways to manifest her joys and despairs through art and writing. One challenge has led to another and Valerie finds herself fully engaged in projects on an ever-widening horizon of artistic adventures.
Valerie exhibits her pastel, watercolour and mixed media work regularly through South Simcoe Arts Council venues and Barrie Art Club, takes commissions and sells greeting card and print versions of her work at several regional locations. Her work is also available to view on instagram @valerielosellart, or youtube " Domicile Art".
Since 2018 Valerie has published an anthology of poetry written for her art called Holding Up the Sky; illustrated a series of children's picture books: Follow the Red Wagon, The Red Wagon's Winter Dream (2020-2021), and The Red Wagon's Scary Night (2022), and Liquid Gold (2024) a process book on making maple syrup with children.
Valerie is an associate member of the LEAGUE OF CANADIAN POETS. Her poem, "Backyard Beauties", appears in WORTH MORE STANDING: Poets and activists celebrate Trees, (Caitlin Press , 2022). She has won prizes in the South Simcoe Arts poetry, short story and fine arts competitions over the last 8 years.
