1000 Words: An Inspired Writing - Raven Maelstrom

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This spring SSAC has ushered in a new collaborative exhibit between our Visual Artists and Writers. Compelling and evocative images inspired stories and poetry of joy and sorrow, fear and longing.

Both the images and the accompanying writing will be shared in store, online, and featured here in our blog throughout the next seven weeks.

Birds Eye View
Written by Teri-Lyn Smethurst, 2022

Watching you from my window, soaring above
What would it be like to sprout wings, to fly away
Weightless, air brushing through my feathers
Freedom from human constraint
Free of gravity restraints
Ripping, racing along the air currents
Seeing the world through a bird's eye view

Wings spanning, gliding circles among the treetops
Observing
In the summer breeze, laundry on the line, flap flapping like wings of a prehistoric beast
Ocean liners appear as children's toys afloat
Freight trains resembling snakes on the move
Cars driving the freeway, much the same as ants marching in line

Rivers, lakes
Forest, Fields
Buildings, fences, walls
City, country
Mother Earth's patchwork quilt

At peace in the limitless blue
Gracefully gliding
The warmth of the sun penetrates my soul
Close to God, amongst the clouds
Like an angel

In the shade of a Maple, concealed I perch A spy, eavesdropping, watching people unaware
Children play
A dog pursues a squirrel
Boy and girl hold hands
Door to door, the mailman goes

A golden sunset burning in the Western sky
Wishing I could keep these feathers,
fly beneath the stars
To forever see the world through a bird's eye view
