1000 Words: An Inspired Writing - What Do You See?

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This spring SSAC has ushered in a new collaborative exhibit between our Visual Artists and Writers. Compelling and evocative images inspired stories and poetry of joy and sorrow, fear and longing.

Both the images and the accompanying writing will be shared in store, online, and featured here in our blog throughout the next seven weeks.

What Do You See?

The sun struggles
To filter through the gloom
That permeates my soul

What remains of autumn light
Kisses the bronzed trees
Much as a lover says goodbye

Cerulean blue loses its grip
Sunlight creates a prism of colour
Competing against angry clouds

Is this Gaia's displeasure?
Revolted by humankind's sins
Inflicted upon her creatures?

I struggle to see the light
Succumbing to the shadows
Of the Forever Night

What is coming?
I dare not think
Of cold winds and wars

Of mad men gone rabid
Intent on destruction
Of humanity

Nuclear winter storms
Blanket the daytime in
Monochrome white

And nighttime so dark
Skeletal trees reach toward
An infinite black

I yearn for the colour of
Sleepy sunrises
And blazing sunsets

Is the fading light
A reflection of my dimming hope?
The darkness my fears?

Or in that very gloom
Is there the promise of light?
Of gentler days to come?

These thoughts torment my days
And haunt my sleep
Now I ask you

What do you see?
The storm clouds
Or the rainbow?
