Ever dreamed of writing a book? Local author Joanie Hebbes (a.k.a. J.C. Kavanagh) has dreamed that dream and taken it to the next level — putting her novels to print and into the minds of readers around the world.
It almost didn’t happen, though. She kept her passion for creative writing on the back-burner until an unexpected business restructuring put a halt to her decades-long career. It took the encouragement and support of her partner, Ian, to finally compel Kavanagh to pursue her dream.
“I’ve always loved to write imaginative stories,” she said. “But my career in the newspaper industry and then communications sector limited me to the ‘facts-only’ type of article. Now, creating characters and scenes and developing a great story-line is my dream come true.”
Hebbes has been a resident in the New Tecumseth area for over 30 years. She is the mother of three and grandmother of two. She’s been active over the years in baseball, volleyball, ball hockey and is currently working on her green belt in kick-boxing.

Her first published book, The Twisted Climb, won the P&E Readers’ Poll Award in 2016 for Best Young Adult Book. The sequel, The Twisted Climb — Darkness Descends, has just been released online.
In The Twisted Climb sequel Darkness Descends, the action, drama and adventure continues for the three main characters. They are again pulled back into the dreaded dream world of Dick Hatemore, where unusual terrors exist and where they discover that accepting the "cross-over" call is the only way to rescue a trapped little girl.
The books are geared toward the young adult/teenage genre, but Hebbes said the story appeals to a broad spectrum of readers, including adults who are “young at heart” and love a good action/adventure type of book.
She will be selling and signing both her books at the South Simcoe Arts studio, located at 41 Victoria St. E. in Alliston from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11.
Her books are found on Amazon.ca and through her Canadian publisher at www.bookswelove.net.
Darkness Descends will be available at Chapters/Indigo in September, though The Twisted Climb is already available in book stores across Canada.
