Dave Silverberg is a spoken word poet, theatre artist, journalist and founder/artistic director of Toronto Poetry Slam. He has performed across Canada and Europe. His debut solo show Jewnique looks at his relationship with Judaism while also profiling several Jewish luminaries in Ontario. Dave is the editor of Canada's first anthology of spoken word in Canada Mic Check (Quattro). His upcoming book of science fiction poetry will be published in 2019 by ChiZine. His non-fiction work has been published in The Washington Post, BBC News, Vice, Globe & Mail, Ars Technica, Canadian Jewish News and many more. Ian French, "IF", Spoken Word Artist
IF’s poetry channels the wisdom of Spirit, the rage of the wounded and the yearning that resides in every human heart. He says “every poem I write is a ‘shout out’ to the sacredness of our days, a three chord party jam, and a tribute to the triumph of love over fear. IF was a member of the National Championship, Toronto Slam Poetry Team in 2013, winner of 2013 Buffalo International Slam and the 2014 Canadian Individual Slam Poetry Champion. In 2016, CBC produced the full-length documentary, IF THE POET, chronicling his journey to the World Cup of Slam Poetry, at age 55.
Ian Keteku, Spoken Word Artist
Ian Keteku is a poet, multi media artist and educator. Keteku is also the 2010 World Poetry Slam Champion and is committed to using words as both an interpertation and cure for the human condition. A youth, Spoken Word Artist, "yes", will opening. yes is a radical queer feminist and migrant based in Toronto who comes to poetry through the Cuban traditions of being a dramatic lover and never shutting up. As an organizer and member of community, they’re committed to the Spoken Word Canada board, Voices of Today festival organizing committee, and One Mic Educators 2.0 program. yes’s poetry is a blend of vulnerable rage and self-celebrating humour. Their intention is to learn so loudly that others have no choice but to follow suit, and they’re just so stoked for our collective growth.
Cael Cohen, Organizer
"Cael Cohen, PhD, is an award-winning university professor, eLearning expert, philosopher, educational researcher, passionate oral storyteller, painter, rock kit drummer and birder. Her specialty is helping undergraduate students and life-long learners transform their lives by becoming better critical thinkers and more confident, thoughtful and reflective reasoners and decision makers. Cael started writing creatively in her early teen years. She is a published author who writes academic articles, poetry and short stories. She is currently writing a young adult fiction novel, a rewrite of Little Red Riding Hood. She gets great pleasure from listening to and engaging in oral storytelling. Her favourite stories to tell are tales of wonder and ghost stories. Cael is fortunate and infinitely grateful to have spent two years as an Apprentice Storyteller with an exceptional, highly skilled group of master storytellers: York Storyteller’s Guild, the only remaining Storytelling Guild in Toronto. She was honoured to tell a 10-minute story, "The Hunter," at the Toronto Festival of Storytelling in 2015. She also researched, created, and led a Guided Historic Ghost Walk that took place near High Park, Toronto, in October 2016. Her ghost story walk made Now Magazine's top ten list of Halloween events for 2016. Cael is an Executive Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 329 Tottenham Ladies Auxiliary, an Affiliate Voting Member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 329 Tottenham, and an Executive Member of the Tecumseth and West Gwillimbury Historical Society."
