At first glance, this painting depicts bold, colourful, stylized flowers. Take a broader second look, however, and the viewer will find a neatly hidden adult male ruby-throated hummingbird hovering beside a flower on the right-hand side of the canvas.

I returned to this popular compositional structure, previously used in my inaugural OAC-funded Urban Agriculture Flora and Fauna collection of 2023, to succinctly capture the fleeting nature of this tiny, intriguing pollinator—the only hummingbird to reportedly nest and breed routinely in Ontario.
