Rewilding Still Creek

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This spring SSAC has ushered in a new collaborative exhibit between our Visual Artists and Writers. Compelling and evocative images inspired stories and poetry of joy and sorrow, fear and longing.

Both the images and the accompanying writing will be shared in store and online.

I stepped into the icy water of the French river to line our canoe over very shallow rocks. There was no rush, as the sun shimmered showing the amazing beauty of the colours of the rocks at my feet. Then Mike, who was in front of me stopped and pointed downwards. Following his gaze I joined him and saw huge fish gently swaying around in place, unfazed by our presence, busy spawning their next generation, glimmering, quietly slowly dancing in the sunlight. I felt so privileged to be able to see their magnificence. We stood there in awe till our cold feet told us to move on and leave them to it, but it is a memory I will never forget. Thank you for catching that moment in your painting!

Artist Statement
I delight in the soul-soothing colour and endless magnificent patterns of the living world: subtle greys and blues of winter skies and snow shadows; fall layers of mauves, oranges and rusts in fields, hillsides and gardens; spring bursts of greens, yellows and violet. My visual work mostly in watercolour and pastel, often layered and enhanced with found or symbolic objects, wants to respond to and celebrate the joy and sometimes tragedy of being in this world, here and now.

As my technical skills have advanced, my impulse for social critique, until recently channelled through my writing, has begun to inform my visual compositions as well. I am strongly in the camp of art as bearing witness to injustice and arousing connection to community and the living world we are part of. I seek to inspire through my own passionate response to the world. It feels like a worthy next chapter. I hope you find it so.
